Fire Suppression — UL 300 Wet Chemical System

Common rejection: Suppression system design not submitted with LAFD application; missing manufacturer installation documents
Correction: Submit UL 300 system manufacturer design document with LAFD application. Show nozzle layout matching hood dimensions. Include automatic gas shutoff valve detail and manual pull station location on FP-1.
Ventilation — LAFD Hood & Duct Requirements
NFPA 96 §7.1 / LAMC 57.20.15Grease duct construction: 16-gauge minimum welded steel or listed factory-built. Duct clearance to combustibles: 18 inches minimum (6 inches with listed wrap). Cleanout access every 20 feet and at changes of direction. Roof termination: minimum 40 inches above roof surface, 10 feet from air intake.
Examiner Note: LAFD inspectors will verify duct gauge and welding during rough inspection. Include duct construction detail on mechanical drawings.
Common rejection: Grease duct clearance to combustible construction not detailed; missing cleanout access locations
Correction: Add grease duct construction detail per NFPA 96 §7.1 on sheet M-1. Show 18-inch clearance to combustibles. Locate cleanout access panels at each direction change and every 20 feet.
Plumbing — LAFD Grease Management
LAMC 57.20.20 / CPC 1014Grease interceptor required on all kitchen waste lines. LAFD reviews grease duct termination and fire separation from plumbing vents. Grease-laden waste lines must be accessible for cleaning and separate from sanitary waste until interceptor.
Examiner Note: LAFD verifies grease duct termination height relative to plumbing vents on the roof plan. Minimum 10-foot separation from any air intake or plumbing vent.
Common rejection: Grease duct termination too close to plumbing vent on roof plan
Correction: Show 10-foot minimum separation between grease duct exhaust termination and any plumbing vent or air intake on roof plan (sheet A-2/M-2).
Electrical — Emergency Systems
NFPA 96 §11.1 / CEC 700 / LAMC 57.20.22Emergency disconnect for all gas and electrical equipment interlocked with suppression system activation. Shunt trip breaker required for kitchen equipment circuits upon suppression discharge. Emergency lighting required in kitchen areas per CEC 700.
Examiner Note: LAFD wants shunt trip breaker location shown on both electrical plan and fire protection plan.
Common rejection: Shunt trip breaker interlock with suppression system not shown on electrical plan
Correction: Show shunt trip breaker location on E-1 and FP-1. Add interlock wiring diagram between suppression system and electrical disconnect. Include emergency lighting locations per CEC 700.
Health — LAFD Food Facility Fire Safety
LAMC 57.20.25 / NFPA 96 §14LAFD reviews fire safety aspects of food facilities: proper clearance between cooking equipment and combustible materials, fire-rated separations between kitchen and dining/storage, portable fire extinguisher placement (K-class within 30 feet of cooking equipment).
Examiner Note: K-class portable extinguisher location must be shown on fire plan. LAFD prefers wall-mounted with signage.
Common rejection: K-class fire extinguisher not shown on plan or located more than 30 feet from cooking equipment
Correction: Add K-class fire extinguisher location on FP-1 within 30 feet travel distance of cooking equipment per NFPA 10 §6.6. Show wall-mount bracket detail and signage.
Structural — LAFD Fire-Rated Assemblies
CBC 706 / NFPA 96 §7.1.4 / LAMC 57.20.16Fire-rated wall and floor/ceiling assemblies penetrated by grease duct require listed fire damper and firestop. 1-hour minimum fire-rated separation between commercial kitchen and adjacent occupancies. Fire-rated shaft enclosure required for multi-story grease duct routing.
Examiner Note: LAFD requires UL listed fire damper detail at every penetration through rated assembly. Include damper manufacturer, model, and UL listing number on detail.
Common rejection: Fire damper manufacturer and UL listing not specified at rated assembly penetrations
Correction: Add fire damper detail at each rated assembly penetration on FP-1/M-1. Specify manufacturer, model number, and UL listing. Include firestop detail per ASTM E814.
ADA — LAFD Emergency Egress
CBC 1009 / ADA §207 / LAMC 57.33.17Accessible means of egress required per CBC 1009. Area of refuge required on floors above or below level of exit discharge in multi-story buildings. Audible and visible fire alarm notification per NFPA 72. Accessible exit signage per CBC 1013.4.
Common rejection: Visible fire alarm notification devices not shown in kitchen and common areas
Correction: Add visible notification appliances (strobes) per NFPA 72 in kitchen, common areas, and restrooms on FP-1. Show accessible exit signage per CBC 1013.4.
Egress — LAFD Exit & Fire Alarm
CBC 1006 / NFPA 72 / LAMC 57.33Fire alarm system required per CBC 907. Manual pull stations at each exit per NFPA 72. Exit doors must swing in direction of travel when serving 50+ occupants. Panic hardware required on exit doors. Illuminated exit signs per CBC 1013.
Examiner Note: LAFD reviews fire alarm device layout separately from LADBS building plan check. Submit fire alarm shop drawings with LAFD application.
Common rejection: Fire alarm shop drawings not submitted with LAFD application
